Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

ABCe: Scotsman.com is leading regional website

By Conrad Quilty-Harper

The website of the Scotsman newspaper, Scotsman.com, was the most popular regional newspaper website during the first six months of the year, according to figures released today.

Johnston Press‘ website recorded 2,172,598 unique users in the first six months of 2009, up 8.1 per cent from the previous reporting period, the last six months of 2008, according to the numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Manchester Evening News website, manchestereveningnews.co.uk, was the second most popular website with 1,062,693 unique users on average during the first six months of the year, although it saw its unique users fall by 5.8 per cent compared to June to December 2008.

The Manchester Evening News website figures continued to be listed by the ABC despite its publisher, MEN Media, announcing last week that it was to withdraw from ABC’s print circulation accreditation.

Northcliffe Media‘s thisisbristol.co.uk website grew 53.2 per cent to an average of 336,731 monthly uniques over the first half of the year.

It was among the regional newspaper websites to have greatly increased users levels over those reported for the second half of last year. Newsquest‘s Swindonadvertiser.co.uk was also a big riser, growing users by 48.6 per cent to 116,486.

Only eight of the 56 websites reported a fall in unique users, with manchestereveningnews.co.uk loss of 65,000 unique users the biggest.

No year on year data is available because this is only the second time ABC has published regional website traffic data for regional newspaper websites published by GMG, Iliffe, Newsquest, Trinity International, Midland News, Northcliffe and Johnston Press.
